BLAENAU Gwent MP Nick Smith has given his backing to Road Safety Week, which this year focuses on the theme of ‘Bike Smart’.

Road Safety Week is the UK’s biggest road safety event, coordinated annually by Brake, the road safety charity.

The aim of the week (running from Nov 19 -25) is to promote life-saving messages and raise awareness of road safety for those on two wheels.

Mr Smith said: “Cycling is a great way to exercise and a cheap and environmentally friendly way to travel.

“However, cyclists are also some of our most vulnerable road users.

“This is why Road Safety Week’s Bike Safe campaign is so important in reminding drivers to be wary of watching out for cyclists, driving slowly and giving plenty of room.

“The campaign also provides information to cyclists and motorcyclists on how to best protect themselves on the roads by riding safely and wearing the right equipment.”
