MP Nick Smith has called for people in Blaenau Gwent to support local independent businesses on Small Business Saturday (December 1).
Small Business Saturday UK is a grassroots campaign aimed at highlighting local independent businesses and encouraging people to ‘shop local’.
The first Saturday of December is dedicated to promoting community businesses with the hope that it will have a lasting effect on our high streets.
Customers can support Small Business Saturday by visiting local stores or by using independent shops online. Some small businesses even take part in the day by hosting events and offering discounts.
In the run up to Small Business Saturday Mr Smith paid visits to A Stitch in Time sewing and alteration shop in Brynmawr and Cwmglo jewellery and fashion, Ebbw Vale.
Blaenau Gwent MP Nick Smith said: “We all know that it is becoming more and more difficult for independent businesses who are in competition with supermarkets and online retail giants.
“Small Business Saturday is a great chance to remind ourselves why it so important to support local businesses.
“When you buy from a local shop, you are putting money back into the community and helping a shopkeeper put food on the table.
“I try to use independent businesses whenever I can, and, as well as having the chance to have a friendly chat, I always get a great level of service.
“I have spoken with local shopkeepers about their concerns for the future of our high streets and there is a lot of work to done – but we do have a good selection of independent businesses in Blaenau Gwent.
“Why not take the opportunity to visit one this weekend and support Small Business Saturday?”
