Nick Smith MP is encouraging ‘parkwalk’ as a great way for people to take their first steps to a heathier lifestyle this month.
Parkwalk is a campaign to celebrate and promote walking at parkrun UK events, to coincide with parkrun’s 18th anniversary in October 2022.
Mr Smith, MP for Blaenau Gwent, who is a keen parkrunner and chair of the Parkrun APPG, has said that this could be the perfect leg-up for anyone thinking about getting involved.
He said: “Often people hear ‘parkrun’ and assume it must be all about racing round a course alongside seasoned runners, but this is absolutely not the case.
“Tons of people choose to walk or slowly jog at their own pace, many people take along a dog or push a buggy. The best thing about parkrun is how friendly and welcoming the events are, no one cares how fast you are going or how you choose to take part.
“This October, parkwalk is all about encouraging anyone who wants to join their local event to come along and have a go.”
Mr Smith, who regularly takes part in the parkrun at Parc Bryn Bach, Tredegar added: “I know first-hand the physical and mental benefits to be had from running.
“Walking is also a great way to stay active and feel many of the same benefits. Walking can help manage or prevent health conditions, improve mental wellbeing, and build fitness.
“Walking at parkrun is a fantastic way to take in the atmosphere, be part of a supportive community and maybe even build up to running eventually.
“I would recommend anyone interested in getting involved to head to their local parkrun this October and maybe invite your friends and family too.”
