Nick Smith MP Labour MP for Blaenau Gwent
MP Nick Smith has paid tribute to the people of Blaenau Gwent to thank them for their generosity in contributing to the Typhoon disaster relief in the Philippines.
He has also spoken in the House of Commons to demand assurances from the Government that DfID has held discussions with international counterparts to coordinate the relief effort.
Nick Smith MP said: “In the aftermath of the devastation and destruction brought by Typhoon Haiyan the people of Blaenau Gwent have once again shown their remarkable scope for generosity and compassion.
“Local people here in Blaenau Gwent have proved once again that they will never look the other way when others are in need.”
“And it’s because of that generosity that I want to make doubly sure that the aid effort in the Philippines is well spent and well directed so British aid helps as many people possible.

Labour’s Shadow International Development Secretary, Jim Murphy added: “I am delighted that Nick is so determined to help those who have been most hurt by the typhoon. It is now three weeks since Typhoon Haiyan made landfall but the situation on the ground remains desperate. That’s why international assistance is so vital to the Philippines.
“The British public have given £3million a day to help those devastated by Typhoon Haiyan. That should be a tremendous source of pride for everyone in this country, and a reminder.
“The Philippines will continue to need our support long after the initial shock has subdued. And that support is exactly what Labour will insist this government provides.”
