I was elected to Parliament on the 6th of May 2010. In Blaenau Gwent we saw a swing to Labour of 29% (the highest in the country) giving the party a majority of 10,516.
I have since retained my seat in two elections (2015 and 2017).
In my nine years as an MP I have been Parliamentary Private Secretary to Douglas Alexander, the Shadow Foreign Secretary, and a member of the influential Public Accounts Committee, responsible for scrutinising government spending for value for taxpayer’s money.
I have also served as the Shadow Minister for Food, Farming and Rural Affairs.
I currently serve as an Opposition Whip
I grew up in the constituency on a council estate in Tredegar and went to the local comprehensive school. My family have lived in the area for generations, working in the mines and steel works before they closed.
My last job before entering Parliament was as Director of Policy and Partnerships at the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists. Prior to this I was the Secretary General of the European Parliamentary Labour Party, campaign manager for the NSPCC, and a councillor in the London Borough of Camden.
In my spare time I enjoy hiking , rugby and reading. I live in Nantyglo.
