Nick Smith MP has attacked the Tory Government for their incompetence after a report savaged their record on Universal Credit.

As part of the Public Accounts Committee, Mr Smith has been grilling officials over the IT system being designed to allow the rollout of Universal Credit.

With a substantial part of the £303m cost likely to be written off, the Blaenau Gwent MP said it had been a catastrophic failure of management.

“In my three years on the PAC this has been the most damning report of Government incompetence I have seen”, he said.

“I have been hammering on about the importance of delivering this project on time and on budget since January 2012, but instead we are faced with a catalogue of failures.

“Millions have been squandered and people’s much-needed support is being put at risk for IDS’s rushed IT project -; with no guarantee more problems aren’t on the way.”
